When I visited Erie recently, my friends took me to Jr.'s Last Laugh Comedy Club. I've never been to a comedy club, so I had very few expectations.
To my surprise, this place was packed, but my friend had bought tickets ahead of time and reserved a table. The waitress was quick, accurate and friendly taking our drink orders.
The opening comic was Warren B. Hall, and let me say, he was good. Really good. The whole crowd was laughing, and someone even tried to heckle him with an Oprah comment. Although no one understood what the audience member was saying, Hall took a minute to give the guy a crazy look and replied, "Wow, sorry, I've just never been heckled with Oprah before."
The next comic, the headliner, was alright. He was funny, I just enjoyed Hall more. I think his jokes were a little more on par with my parents' humor, or maybe their parents' humor (for instance, jokes about Ethel Merman and Frank Sinatra -- lots of them). Not that there's anything wrong with that, I was just ignorant I guess.
What was the most impressive thing to me was that the owner (or maybe manager) shook everyone's hand on the way out and asked how the service was.
Visit the comedy club's website for a full schedule. Not only are there headlining comics on most weekends, but the club hosts some wacky events like Tony Valentine's Girls' Night Out (featuring male Chippendale dancers) and the Last Comic Standing event (if you think you're funny, maybe you should put your comic skills to the test).
On the nights when there's no live comedy, you'll still find a fun-loving crowd here. (The bar is actually called Doug's Punchline, but it's located inside Jr.'s Last Laugh.) Starting between 7 and 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday nights you'll enjoy a dueling pianos performance that will likely get you dancing -- and there's no cover.
Doug's Punchline Bar is open Wednesday through Saturday 5 p.m. to close. They even have a reasonably priced food menu in case you need something to munch on.
